Preparing for Life After College

Although in my current situation I am technically still in school and a full time student, I am beginning to change mindset from student  to ... well not being a student. With the internship and the academy, my mind has been constantly on the future and what the plan is. ever since high school i have been a student including summer school. I was able to live off of part time wages and the luxuries handed down from my parents such as furniture and my car. Although I have also been working since in high school, it wasn't a job that made me think of my future like I have been lately. It has come to the point where it is time to apply everything I studied in school to the career field I hope to achieve. I won't have the flexible schedule that is one of the best parts of college life where you can at times just take a spontaneous trips with your friends just because. Instead of thinking about what bar me and my friends will go to after I get home from work or school I find myself thinking about what I'll be making for breakfast as I am getting ready for bed. I am finding myself thinking about where I want to live and buy a house and all the other things that come with preparing to live life without homework and due dates for items you aren't getting paid to do. I'm excited for the future and feel prepared to move forward thanks greatly in part to my experiences through school.

  1. I am really excited that you have found this opportunity to bring focus to your next steps and future. Reality can suck, but when you prepare it can be just a tad bit easier. Remember though life happens when you are too busy making other plans or something like that so just remember to take a break every once in a while. It is nice to daydream though when the days get though at the internship. Look forward to hearing more.

  2. I hear you, on the same note I am starting to feel like school gets on the way of that. It is like you get to a point in your life where being a student is less important than coming to the realization of finding a career, having a life and preparing for the future. It is a great start, I hope everything unfold in your favors. Good luck!

  3. Zachary, I think many of us are having similar thoughts, i.e. what will life be like post graduation. I really enjoyed reading your post, and sometimes my thoughts also center around the next meal although as graduate student I find little time these days to cook...before you know it your undergraduate days will be behind you. However, it is often said, college is the best time of your life, don't forget to cherish these last few days. All the best with your internship and graduation.

  4. Zachary, it's a very exciting time in ones life. I personally couldn't wait to graduate and to finally just work. For one, there's no homework! It'll be an adjustment to start, but eventually life after college becomes much more flexible and you can begin to mold it as you'd like. I will warn you, there may be a few nights when you actually dream that you forgot to complete an assignment - it happened to me ;-]
Congrats on being so close to the finish line!
